  1. Novell DR Multiuser DOS 5.1 Bridges Network and MultiUser DOS Systems

  6. (formerly Digital Research, Inc.) today announced DR Multiuser DOS  version
  7. 5.1, providing users the economical and localized connectivity advantages
  8. of a multiuser computer workgroup with full access to NetWare network
  9. services.

  11. DR Multiuser DOS is an ideal workgroup solution for accounting, database,
  12. and other applications that frequently access shared resources and data. 
  13. The operating system enables low-cost PCs and terminals to be linked
  14. through an inexpensive serial connection, with eight simultaneous DOS
  15. sessions per user.

  17. "For NetWare users, DR Multiuser DOS 5.1 provides capabilities previously
  18. available only in UNIX, such as multiple terminals having multitasking
  19. capabilities and access to the network, while allowing low-cost expansion
  20. of NetWare networks wherever workgroups exist," said Dick Williams,
  21. executive vice president and general manager of Novell's Desktop Systems
  22. Group.

  24. "For DR Multiuser DOS customers, the new version provides connectivity with
  25. the industry's leading network and the full support of Novell.  Version 5.1
  26. is a great first example of the synergy between two development teams--one
  27. coming from the network, the other from the desktop."

  29. New NetWare Connectivity Drivers
  30.  
  31. Version 5.1 includes new NetWare connectivity drivers that efficiently link
  32. a DR Multiuser DOS workgroup to the network and its resources.  The
  33. multi-session drivers run on a 386 or 486 DR Multiuser DOS host computer
  34. and provide 16 simultaneous NetWare sessions through a single NetWare
  35. adapter card.  Previously, the DR Multiuser DOS host computer only allowed
  36. single-session access to Novell NetWare.  This configuration benefits the
  37. user by costing roughly half that of providing individual network nodes and
  38. substantially reduces network traffic by localizing shared resources within
  39. the workgroup.

  41. Like NetWare Lite, DR Multiuser DOS provides an inexpensive connectivity
  42. solution -- but targets a different type of customer.  While NetWare Lite
  43. is designed for users with compute-intensive applications who have an
  44. occasional need to exchange data, DR  Multiuser DOS addresses just the
  45. opposite: people who use applications such as accounting, where a common,
  46. shared data resource is their overriding concern.

  48. Pricing and Availability

  50. DR Multiuser DOS 5.1 will begin shipping April 13, 1992, with a suggested
  51. retail price of $695 U.S.  Upgrades will be available to all registered
  52. users of DR Multiuser DOS 5.0.  Customers outside the U.S. should contact
  53. their local reseller or their regional Novell office.
